ACU appoints deputy Vice Chancellor
Dr. Muyiwa Popoola has been appointed as the third Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the African Christian University (ACU) by the ACU Governing Council.
On Thursday, February 10, 2022, the Governing Council, chaired by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), accepted Professor Popoola’s appointment during its 76th statutory meeting, which was held in Abuja.
Earlier, on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, he was chosen to the post by the Senate of the University, which met for its 110th statutory sitting, which was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Adebayo.
Muyiwa Popoola is a Professor of Journalism, Communication, and Media Studies at Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo, Nigeria, and the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Studies.
He was guided by Providence to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Honours in Mass Communication with First Class Honours in 1999, as well as honors for being the best graduating student in the Department and the top final year student in the Faculty. Following that, he received a Master of Science (MSc) in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos in Nigeria. Similarly to Nsukka, he was awarded the University teaching assistantship and was recognized for achieving the highest level of performance on the program.
He received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) in Media and Cultural Studies from the University of Ibadan in 2012, after a rigorous academic program that culminated in his continual quest for knowledge, dedication, and excellence. He was one of the youngest professors in the area of mass communication when he was promoted to the Professorial cadre a few years ago.
Muyiwa Popoola has served as the Head of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, the Director of the Media Center, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, a member of the Senate and the Appointments and Promotions Committee, and a member of the Governing Council of the institution at various times in the past. He has been teaching and doing research in journalism in Nigeria for more than two decades.
He has a slew of scholarly papers to his name, all of which have appeared in peer-reviewed academic journals and other scholarly channels. While Popoola has written several books, he has also edited and co-edited a number of collections of readings.
Muyiwa Popoola, a Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Sub Saharan Africa Media Scholar, is a frequent presenter of papers at local and international conferences. She has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Zimbabwe. UNESCO and the National Secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) have hired him as a consultant on political communication and journalistic safety, respectively.
His primary research interests are in the fields of media and society, media, peace and security studies, media and critical-cultural studies, political communication, and critical-cultural studies. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including, but not limited to, the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Forum of African Media Educators (FAME), and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Professor Popoola is a very intelligent individual who has just been appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
In addition to being blissfully married to Elizabeth, Muyiwa Popoola and Elizabeth have been blessed with three children: Beulah, Baruch, and Benjamin.
